Julius Eastman - Evil Nigger
One of Julius Eastman's most famous works Evil Nigger will be performed for the first time in Norway, by pianists Heloisa Amaral, Elisa Medinilla and Frederik Croen.
The African-American composer, pianist and dancer Julius Eastman’s (1940-1990) life was characterized by great contrasts. Balancing the established, academic contemporary music field and New York's downtown scene, he was among the first to combine minimalist art music with elements of pop in his compositions – a direction continued by Rhys Chatham and Arthur Russell. He was also the first male vocalist in Meredith Monk’s ensemble.
He died homeless in 1990, with no public notice given to his death until eight months later. Today, Eastman is starting to get the artistic recognition he deserves. One of his ensemble works was recently released on the Finnish label Frozen Reeds, and a biography was published last year.
Evil Nigger is a tremendous piano piece, here performed on three grand pianos, with a clear political sting, and will be presented for the first time in Norway by three internationally renowned pianists: Heloisa Amaral, Elisa Medinilla and Frederik Croene.
