David Keenan: Crime Calls For Night

David Keenan, the author of England’s Hidden Reverse, a secret history of the esoteric underground, presents a daring argument that traces the transgressive urge that animates industrial culture all the way from Palaeolithic cave art through rock n roll and punk rock and up to contemporary noise music.

Taking in Whitehouse, Elvis Presley, Throbbing Gristle, the Lascaux cave paintings, the serial killer Peter Sutcliffe, Amiri Baraka, Joseph Goebbels, Metal Machine Music, James Bond, Godspeed You Black Emperor, country blues, Buchenwald and Arthur Machen, Keenan asks if it is possible to say yes to no, to find redemption in hate speech and horror.

Based on several years' worth of exclusive interviews and unprecedented access to all three bands' personal archives, England's Hidden Reverse was the first, definitive, biography of Coil, Current 93 and Nurse With Wound.

David Keenan is a Scottish critic and author. He is a regular contributor to The Wire since 1995, and from 2005 - 2015 he co-ran Volcanic Tongue, a shop for underground music, distributor, and mailorder business.

Strange Attractor Press will publish a newly revised and expanded edition of England’s Hidden Reverse 15 November 2015.
