In Defence of the Virtual: A Secret History of Ballardian Cinema
Q&A with Audun Lindholm, editor of Vagant

Simon Sellars is the publisher of, the most extensive website devoted to the life and work of J.G. Ballard. He is also co-editor of the acclaimed Extreme Metaphors, a collection of Ballard's interviews. In past lives, Simon has been an architecture critic, an academic, a film critic and a travel writer. At Only Connect he will present film rarities and short videos connected to the ever-expanding Ballardian universe.

In Defence of the Virtual: A Secret History of Ballardian Cinema

During his career, J.G. Ballard was courted by two major filmmakers: Steven Spielberg, who filmed Empire of the Sun, and David Cronenberg, who directed Crash. But that's not where Ballardian cinema begins and ends. Beyond the glamour of the two Bergs exists an entire universe of Ballardian film, from low-budget, arthouse productions based on his works, to no-budget, fanmade YouTube obscurities, to films existing in overlit parallel worlds to Ballard's own.

In this exclusive presentation, Simon Sellars teases out the secret history of Ballardian cinema. Explore Ballard's New Wave roots with the films of Chris Marker and Jean-Luc Godard. Learn why Ballard compared his writing to the revolutionary spaghetti westerns of Sergio Leone. Discover how Spielberg and Cronenberg fused with Ballard long before Empire and Crash. Find out how Ballard predicted the death of cinema, and his early work, with the rise of CCTV. Enter the occult terminal zone of British Public Service Announcements, one of the many forks in the Ballardian multiverse. And immerse yourself in the bizarre world of 'vapourware' adaptations, where names such as Richard Gere and Samuel L. Jackson grapple with Ballard... and lose.

In Defence of the Virtual: A Secret History of Ballardian Cinema (2014). Directed by Steven Spielberg, David Cronenberg, Jean-Luc Godard, Roberto Rossellini, Andrei Tarkovsky, George Romero, John Carpenter, Nic Roeg, Chris Marker, Danny Boyle, George Miller and more.
